In a world where we are constantly connected, why do so many of us still feel disconnected?

We wake up and check our phones. We scroll through other people's lives, reply to messages, watch videos, and move from one responsibility to the next. There is always something demanding our attention.

Yet, despite being connected to everyone and everything, many of us still experience moments when we feel distant from ourselves, from the people around us, and sometimes, from Allah. This is where Salah comes in.

More Than Something We Have to Do

For many of us, Salah can sometimes become part of our routine. We pray because it is time to pray, then we finish and continue with our day.

Between work, university, family, friends, and everything else happening around us, prayer can sometimes feel like just another thing we need to fit into our schedule. But Salah was never meant to be something we simply check off a list.

Allah says in the Quran:

وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ لِذِكْرِي

“And establish prayer for My remembrance.”

Surah Taha, 20:14

Salah is a moment of remembrance. A moment to step away from the noise. A moment to put everything else down. A moment to stand before Allah.

The World Doesn't Stop, But You Can

Life can feel overwhelming. There will always be work to finish, messages to answer, problems to solve, and plans to make. There will be days when you feel happy and days when you feel completely lost.

Salah doesn't necessarily make those problems disappear. But it gives us somewhere to return to. A place to pause and remember that we don't have to carry everything alone.

Allah says:

أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ

“Surely in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find comfort.”

Surah Ar-Ra'd, 13:28

Sometimes, we search everywhere for peace. We look for distractions. We scroll. We keep ourselves busy. We wait for our circumstances to change.

But perhaps peace isn't always about escaping what is happening around us. Sometimes, it comes from reconnecting with Allah in the middle of it.

When you stand for Salah, the world may still be busy around you. Your responsibilities may still be waiting, and your problems may still be there. But for those few moments, you can simply stop.

Connection Doesn't Always Feel the Same

One of the biggest misconceptions we can have is thinking that every Salah needs to feel deeply emotional. Some days, you may feel completely present. Other days, your mind may wander.

You may pray while feeling grateful. You may pray while feeling heartbroken. You may pray while feeling confused about your life. You may even pray on days when you don't feel much at all. But connection with Allah isn't only measured by how emotional you feel.

Sometimes, connection simply means showing up. Even when you're tired. Even when life feels busy. Even when you feel distant. Even when you don't know what to say.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if they are small.”

Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

Your relationship with Allah isn't built in one perfect moment. It is built every time you return. Every time you make the effort to pray. Every time you choose to stand before Allah, even on the days when it feels difficult.

Salah Is Your Moment to Come Back

We spend so much of our lives looking outward. We look at what other people are doing. We think about what happened yesterday. We worry about what might happen tomorrow. But during Salah, we are brought back. Back to the present. Back to ourselves. And most importantly, back to Allah.

Allah says:

وَمَن يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُ

“And whoever puts their trust in Allah, then He alone is sufficient for them.”

Surah At-Talaq, 65:3

For those few moments of Salah, you don't need to have everything figured out.

You don't need to know what your future looks like. You don't need to solve every problem.

You simply need to return.

No matter what kind of day you've had, the next prayer is waiting for you.

No matter how disconnected you feel, you can always reconnect.

Finding Your Sela

Sela means connection. Perhaps Salah is one of the most personal forms of connection we have.

It isn't about performing perfectly. It isn't about having the perfect emotional experience every single time. It is about creating space in your day for Allah.

Five moments to stop. Five moments to remember. Five moments to reconnect.

Allah says:

فَاذْكُرُونِي أَذْكُرْكُمْ

“So remember Me; I will remember you.”

Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:152

Perhaps this is the beauty of Salah. No matter how busy life becomes, we are constantly given an opportunity to return. To pause. To remember. To reconnect.

So, the next time you stand to pray, try not to see Salah as something interrupting your day. See it as something bringing you back to what truly matters.

Because in a world where we are connected to everything, Salah reminds us to stay connected to the One who matters most.

Salah is more than a pause in your day. It is your moment of Sela, your moment of connection.
